Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
One of the co-founders of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside his partner, revealed that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within an individual series showcasing causes the company was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators versus Corporate Owner
This latest development deepens the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed how the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed via social media how he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for naming options and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Current Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which originally established several years back to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, after many years of involvement, citing worries regarding how the company's autonomy had been compromised after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence so that the company can achieve the social mission, the values that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
