British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect behind many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
This news arrives shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
- Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
Design circles laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
