Chinese Government Condemns United States of ‘Contradictory Stances’ Over Tariff Threat
Trump’s newest threat to impose an further complete levy on products from China has been labeled a “classic case” of American hypocrisy, according to the China’s leadership.
A Commerce Ministry spokesperson further commented that China could introduce its own undisclosed “retaliatory steps” if the US President executes his warning, noting that the country was “unafraid” of a potential trade war.
On Friday, Donald Trump hit back at China’s decision to tighten its rules for overseas sales of critical elements, charging the Chinese leadership of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “captive”.
He also vowed to withdraw from a arranged talks with Beijing’s head of state Xi Jinping, which was arranged for a conference in the Republic of Korea before the month ends.
The former president’s remarks on last Friday unsettled financial markets, with the benchmark US stock index dropping nearly three percent, marking its largest decline since last spring.
The president’s words reignited fears of a trade conflict between the US and China.
In May, the respective governments had agreed to drop significant levies on each other’s goods, which had created the possibility of trade halting between the economic powers.
