Line of Duty Confirmed for Seventh Series on BBC
The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-episode series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."
The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived this week.
Fresh Obstacles for AC-12
The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.
Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
Martin Compston called being part of the series as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.
Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."
"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.
The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for further series.
Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
