The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point in his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central policy, hesitated to declare this decision promptly following his triumph in November.

"My choice was based on our family's safety and the imperative to directing my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain within me and my work," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment even though he is from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for public city functions, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
