NY Introduces Online Platform for Residents to Report ICE Videos Following Detentions of 4 American Citizens

New York state AG has rolled out a recent reporting form urging locals to submit images and footage of immigration raids around New York. This step follows a day after a high-profile enforcement action disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking widespread protests.

American Citizens Held During Enforcement Action

A congressional representative announced during a Wednesday press conference that four citizens were taken into custody and held for "almost a full day" following the enforcement action. Demonstrations erupted in NYC on consecutive evenings.

"Every New Yorker has the right to exist without intimidation," the attorney general wrote in a release.

"If you witnessed and captured immigration enforcement yesterday, I ask you to provide that footage with us. We are committed to examining these reports and investigating any violations of law."

Portal Features

The portal includes spaces to send visual evidence of the operation, plus a field to specify geographic details. Prior to sending, individuals must tick a checkbox that states that "authorities could utilize any evidence provided in a public document, including in a court case or official statement."

Information about the Manhattan Operation

The Manhattan operation, which observers say involved dozens of ICE personnel, occurred in a well-known district of Manhattan where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are regularly available widely – often to visitors.

Footage of Tuesday's raid reveal numerous covered and weaponized federal agents restraining and arresting a person, and forcing aside onlookers. Crowds of New Yorkers trailed the agents along the roads. An armored truck was also seen traveling down the urban roads.

Leadership Statements

In a midweek briefing featuring the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a Democratic representative, said that four US citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where four American citizens should be detained for no reason." He said the persons were let go on Wednesday with no accusations made.

"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman stated. "This constitutes a armed campaign to create conflict. It is merely a justification to incite violence for the government to bring in the armed forces to halt violence that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Anger over the federal action quickly spread – all three mayoral candidates condemned the operation, as did NY's governor.

"Repeatedly, the Trump administration selects heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, not safety. It needs to cease," a contender stated.

New York City advocacy organizations expressed outrage as well.

"ICE raided Manhattan's Chinatown with tactical trucks, covered personnel and protective equipment to focus on small merchants attempting to earn income. This raid had no relation to public safety and was entirely about frightening communities and areas," said the head of a advocacy group.

ICE Policies

Agency rules bans the arrest of American nationals and the agency has claimed it refrains from apprehend American nationals. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has discovered that numerous American nationals have been detained unlawfully by ICE since the start of the present government.

Recent Pattern

ICE raids have been becoming more common in the state and nationwide recently.

A recent action in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the existing leadership. Demonstrations opposing ICE are commonplace as are allegations of aggression and inhumane treatment.

Recently, a letter provided by legal entities claimed inadequate care of pregnant women in government custody.
