Rory McIlroy celebrates Sports Personality success with twin accolades.

Moments before he was crowned, a trepidatious thought flashed through Rory McIlroy's mind. He said he was hoping, "Not a racing champion again."

"This has been a fantastic night for golf," McIlroy declared. "Golf was recognized in such a major way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and hopefully we can use that."

This time around, however, there was no dramatic upset. The outcome was clear, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to savor a memorable evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were honored as the top squad.

Constant Motion

Instead of opting to stay for the aftershow party, McIlroy was already plotting his immediate plans. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was returning immediately to Florida.

"It's been a hectic 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of a break over Christmas."

Unfinished Business

However, McIlroy made clear he has no plans to rest on his laurels, notwithstanding securing the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a few good years in me," he claimed.

"Additional major championships, season-long rankings, Ryder Cups, that's great. But provided that you feel like you can keep progressing and have the desire, that's the essential part."

Team Triumph

At the same time, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the collective trophy, also lauded golf's stellar night and his great friend's individual success.

"These become the times that will stay with us for all time so to get the people's vote for that is amazing," Fleetwood said. "And to be there Rory win, I think he is so worthy so much."

Upon hearing that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood chuckled before quipping, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"

Future Goals

Fleetwood hopes to finally win his initial major championship next year but he recognized McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "As long as you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to work on," Fleetwood explained.

Club Support

As he was leaving, one final question was raised. As a huge Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be tempted to do it again after his new triumphs?

"If they stop conceding so many goals on their own pitch," McIlroy responded with a smile. "There is progress. There's a hint of positivity around."

Following a remarkable year, it's little surprise that Rory McIlroy is looking on the bright side.
