The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
