The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
