During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious start to his term.

A Historic Figure

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Defying suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
